Ortto Alternatives After the Canva Acquisition: Where B2B Marketing Teams Should Migrate

On April 8, 2026, Canva acquired Ortto, the customer-data and marketing automation platform formerly known as Autopilot. If you are one of Ortto’s 11,000+ customers, you now have a question the acquisition coverage did not answer: what happens to the journeys, email, and SMS your marketing runs on?

This post answers it the way we answered the same question for Drift users during the Drift sunset: what actually happened, how to read it, who should stay calm, who should plan an exit, and the honest map of Ortto alternatives by use case - plus the migration checklist if you decide to move.

What actually happened

The verifiable facts, per TechCrunch’s coverage of the announcement:

Note what is not in that list: any commitment to Ortto as a standalone product, any roadmap for existing customers, and any end-of-life date. As of early August 2026, Ortto’s own homepage does not mention the acquisition at all - it is still running 14-day trials as if nothing happened.

“Strengthens our ability to power Canva Grow” is an integration story. Nobody announced a shutdown, and it is possible Ortto runs standalone for years. But when a platform’s stated future is powering someone else’s product, the risk you carry is roadmap risk: features freeze, integrations lag, support thins, and the eventual migration happens on the acquirer’s timeline instead of yours. Drift customers learned this sequence recently enough that it should inform how Ortto customers plan.

Is Ortto shutting down?

No. There is no announced shutdown, no cutoff date, and the platform is operating normally. If Ortto is working for you today, nothing forces a move this quarter.

The honest framing is different: the acquisition converts “should we ever leave Ortto?” from a someday question into a preparedness question. Three signals worth watching over the next few quarters:

  1. Roadmap language. Do release notes keep shipping Ortto features, or do announcements start saying “now available in Canva Grow”?
  2. Pricing and packaging changes. Acquired tools often get repackaged toward the acquirer’s model - per-seat, bundled, or usage-based shifts are the tell.
  3. Support and integration upkeep. The first thing to decay under consolidation is the long tail of integrations and the speed of support replies.

If any of those move the wrong way, you will be glad you did the preparation below while there was no deadline.

Stay, prepare, or go: a quick decision framework

Stay (for now) if Ortto’s CDP is deeply wired into your product events, your journeys are stable, and you have no contract renewal in the next two quarters. Do the data-export step anyway.

Prepare if you are a small B2B team using Ortto mainly for journeys, email, and SMS - the majority of the Autopilot-heritage base. Your usage is the most portable, which means preparation is cheap and switching later is a project measured in days, not months.

Go now if you were already unhappy before the acquisition. Pre-acquisition reviews of Ortto were consistent about the friction points: Encharge’s roundup cites pricing that “increases quickly with more contacts” and “rigid automation rules.” An acquisition does not fix the complaints you already had - it adds uncertainty on top of them.

The best Ortto alternatives in 2026, by use case

There is no single best alternative - there is the best one for what you actually used Ortto for. Positioned honestly:

You used Ortto forBest direction
Journeys + email + SMS for a small B2B SaaS teamAn AI-first system that builds and runs the campaigns for you - for example, Marqeable
Ecommerce flows tied to a storeKlaviyo or Omnisend - both are built around commerce events
Enterprise mobile lifecycle (push, in-app, at scale)Braze - heavier and priced accordingly
Mostly a CRM with email attachedHubSpot - the all-in-one path, with trade-offs we have written about
Simple newsletters and basic sendsMailchimp or similar - though B2B SaaS teams tend to outgrow it (why)

Two things the comparison tables at review sites will not tell you. First, most of those pages were written before April 2026 and evaluate Ortto as a going concern with a roadmap - re-read them with that in mind. Second, the real dividing line in 2026 is not feature checklists, it is who does the work. Ortto, like most of the tools above, is a builder: it gives your team a canvas and waits. The newer generation runs the campaign for you - drafts the emails and texts in your brand voice, assembles the journey, and asks for your approval before anything sends.

What to look for in an Ortto replacement (if you are the B2B SaaS case)

If your Ortto usage was journeys, email, and SMS for a lean B2B team, your replacement shortlist should be able to:

The Ortto migration checklist

Whether you move now or just prepare, do these in order:

  1. Export everything while access is easy. Contacts with custom fields and activity history, suppression/unsubscribe lists, and your asset library. After the Drift experience, our standing advice is: export before you need to.
  2. Inventory your journeys on paper. For each: trigger, steps, timing, and the goal it serves. Most teams find a handful of journeys do the real work and the rest are archaeology - do not pay to migrate the archaeology.
  3. Map your data sources. List every form, tracking snippet, and integration feeding Ortto’s CDP. This list is your actual switching cost; it is usually shorter than feared.
  4. Stand up the replacement in parallel. Rebuild your top two or three journeys, run them on a small segment, and compare outcomes before cutting over.
  5. Cut over cleanly. Move suppression lists first (compliance does not get a transition period), swap the forms and snippet, pause the old journeys, and keep Ortto read-only through one full billing cycle as your safety net.

Suppression lists are the step teams forget. Unsubscribes and STOP replies must carry over on day one - a contact who opted out in Ortto and gets your first email from the new system is a compliance problem, not a growth strategy.

Who Marqeable is (and is not) the right move for

Marqeable fits if you are a B2B SaaS or tech team of one to five that used Ortto for journeys, email, and SMS, and you would rather approve campaigns than assemble them. Marqeable’s agents plan and draft the campaign, automations run the follow-up across text and email, replies land in one inbox with opt-outs and quiet hours handled, and revenue attribution ties results to the exact message. We are in private beta with a small early cohort, so you get hands-on onboarding rather than a migration PDF.

Marqeable is not the right fit if your core Ortto use was the CDP as a data warehouse, ecommerce store events, or mobile push and in-app messaging at enterprise scale. Those cases belong with the platforms built for them, per the table above.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ortto shutting down?

No shutdown has been announced, and Ortto is operating normally. But Canva’s stated plan is to power Canva Grow with Ortto’s capabilities, which is why prepared teams are exporting data and shortlisting alternatives now, without a deadline forcing them.

What did Canva say about Ortto’s future?

Canva COO Cliff Obrecht said Ortto “strengthens our ability to power the entire marketing and content lifecycle through Canva Grow.” There has been no public commitment to Ortto as a standalone product beyond that.

What is the best Ortto alternative?

For small B2B SaaS teams using journeys, email, and SMS, Marqeable is the most direct fit. Ecommerce points to Klaviyo or Omnisend, enterprise mobile lifecycle to Braze, and CRM-first teams to HubSpot.

Do I need to migrate right now?

No. Unlike the Drift sunset, there is no cutoff to beat. Export your data, inventory your journeys, and know your landing spot - then a future roadmap change is a planned switch instead of a scramble.

The bottom line

The Canva acquisition does not make Ortto a sinking ship, and anyone telling you to panic-migrate is selling something. It does convert Ortto’s roadmap from “yours” to “Canva’s” - and the teams that handle that well are the ones that export early, inventory their journeys, and pick their landing spot before anyone makes them. If your landing spot needs to run journeys, email, and SMS and do the drafting work your team used to do by hand, that is the job we built Marqeable for.

See it live: Marqeable builds and runs your campaigns, runs follow-up automations across text and email, answers every visitor with AI website chat, and ties revenue to the exact message with attribution.
