The HubSpot Cliff: What Happens Between $20 and $800 a Month
Every first marketing hire at a Series A company meets the same moment. You have been running HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter for a few months. The list has grown past a thousand contacts, you want a real nurture sequence, and someone on the sales side asked for a report Starter cannot build. You open the upgrade page. The next tier costs forty times what you pay today, and there is nothing in between.
That is the cliff. This post maps it with HubSpot’s own numbers: what each tier costs, what sits behind the paywall, the four charges that are not on the pricing page, and an honest answer to whether the jump is worth it for a team of one to three.
The three tiers, side by side
All figures are from HubSpot’s Marketing Hub pricing page and HubSpot’s own pricing guide, checked 2026-09-05. Annual-commitment prices are the ones HubSpot shows first; month-to-month runs higher.
| Starter | Professional | Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|---|
| List price | $20 per seat per month | $800 per month (annual), $890 month-to-month | From $3,600 per month |
| Seats included | Per seat | 3 core seats, extra from $45 per month | 5 core seats, extra from $75 per month |
| Marketing contacts included | 1,000 | 2,000 | 10,000 |
| Email sends per month | 5x your contact tier | 10x your contact tier | 20x your contact tier |
| Onboarding fee | None | $3,000 one-time, required | $7,000 one-time, required |
| Automation | Simple automation only | Full workflow builder | Full builder plus omni-channel automation |
Two things stand out before any analysis. Starter is priced per seat and Professional is priced per platform, so the comparison is not one seat against one seat. And Professional bundles three seats whether you have three marketers or one.
Why there is no middle step
HubSpot draws the line between Starter and Professional at the exact features a growing marketing team reaches for first. Per Docket’s 2026 pricing breakdown, Starter has no workflow automation builder, no A/B testing and no custom reporting. Professional unlocks all three.
The same line gates the add-ons. The marketing SMS add-on requires Professional or Enterprise, per HubSpot’s SMS setup documentation. The AI credit allowances that power Breeze agents scale with tier as well, which we covered in the Breeze alternatives post.
So the moment you need one of these, you need all of Professional. There is no “Starter plus workflows” SKU. That is a packaging decision, and a rational one from HubSpot’s side: the features that signal a company is growing are the features that justify the bigger contract.
The four charges that are not on the pricing page
The list price is the number everyone quotes. These four are the numbers that show up on the invoice.
1. The onboarding fee appears at checkout. The $3,000 Professional fee is required for direct purchases and shows up when you buy, not on the comparison table most people screenshot. Independent reviews such as Docket’s describe it as non-refundable and charged whether or not your team attends the onboarding sessions. If you buy through a HubSpot partner agency, the fee is sometimes waived in exchange for their services, which is worth asking about.
2. Three seats, whether you need them. Professional includes three core seats. For a team of one, two of them sit empty. For a team of four, the fourth costs from $45 a month on annual terms, $50 month-to-month.
3. Contact tiers step up on their own. Marketing contacts are billed in tiers, and the tier moves when your list crosses the line. Per HubSpot’s own guide, moving from 2,000 to 5,000 contacts on Professional adds roughly $250 a month. BossBot’s SMB cost review notes that tier upgrades bill mid-contract with no grace period for cleaning the list first. A single imported CSV can move the tier before anyone notices.
4. Monthly billing costs more than annual. The $800 figure assumes an annual commitment. Month-to-month is $890, and HubSpot’s guide puts the annual discount at 10 to 20 percent across tiers. The flexibility to leave costs about $1,080 a year on Professional.
Year one on Professional, added up. On annual terms at list price: $800 x 12 = $9,600 in subscription, plus $3,000 onboarding, for $12,600 before extra seats or contact tiers. Month-to-month: $890 x 12 = $10,680, plus $3,000, for $13,680. Cross into the 5,000-contact tier in month six and add roughly $1,500 more. Those are HubSpot’s inputs; run your own list-growth curve through them rather than trusting anyone’s total, including ours.
When Professional is the right buy
This is the part most alternatives posts skip, so here it is plainly.
You have a real marketing department. Three or more people who each need a seat, a list well past 2,000 contacts, and campaigns across email, social and landing pages every week. Professional was built for that shape, and at that scale the per-head cost is unremarkable.
Your sales team already lives in HubSpot. If Sales Hub is the system of record and the reps work the contact record all day, keeping marketing on the same platform removes an integration and a data argument. That is worth money.
You need HubSpot’s reporting specifically. Multi-touch attribution across content, ads, social and sales activity is one of Marketing Hub’s genuine strengths at the higher tiers. If the board question is “which channel drove which deal” and you have the volume to make the models meaningful, this is a reason to pay.
Someone will build the workflows. Professional’s automation is powerful and empty on day one. A team with the time to design, test and maintain branching workflows gets the value. A team that sets up two sequences and never opens the builder again is paying for a department’s tool.
When it is the wrong buy for a team of one to three
The cliff exists because Professional is sized for a department. A first marketing hire usually is not one.
The seats are empty. One marketer pays for three.
The list is small. A Series A company with 1,500 contacts is paying for 2,000 and will hit the next tier the month a webinar list gets imported.
The workflows do not get built. The honest test: who on your team will spend the next quarter inside the automation builder? If the answer is “me, in the evenings”, you are about to pay $12,600 for features that stay switched off. We wrote about this pattern in HubSpot won’t run your campaigns.
The thing you actually need is different. Most first hires do not need a workflow builder. They need the campaign written, the landing page live, the follow-ups sent, and the replies answered while they are in a meeting. Professional gives you the tools to build all of that yourself. It does not do any of it for you.
The step that is not on HubSpot’s upgrade page
HubSpot’s CRM is free and separate from Marketing Hub. That fact changes the decision, because almost everything that competes with Marketing Hub syncs with the CRM you already have.
A team of one to three can keep HubSpot as the system of record, with contacts, lifecycle stages and deals where the sales side expects them, and run campaigns and follow-ups from something that plugs into it. No migration, no empty seats, no onboarding fee, and no cliff. The full landscape of those tools, with verified prices, is in HubSpot Marketing Hub alternatives for startups. If you want to see how one of them lines up against Marketing Hub row by row, the comparison on our homepage puts them side by side.
That is the shape we built Marqeable for. It connects to HubSpot or Salesforce, drafts the campaign from a brief, publishes the email, the posts, the landing page and the blog post, runs the follow-ups based on what each lead does, and answers website chat and text replies in seconds. Email replies are drafted for your approval, never sent on their own. Lifecycle stages come in from your CRM; replies, meetings and activity go back. Beta pricing is quoted on a call and locked for life for early customers, month-to-month, with hands-on onboarding included rather than invoiced.
Frequently asked questions
How much more does HubSpot Marketing Hub Professional cost than Starter?
Starter lists at $20 per seat per month. Professional lists at $800 per month on an annual commitment ($890 month-to-month), includes three seats and 2,000 marketing contacts, and carries a required one-time $3,000 onboarding fee. For a single marketer that is a step from $20 to $800 a month, roughly 40x, before contacts or extra seats.
Is the HubSpot Professional onboarding fee mandatory?
Yes, for direct purchases at list terms. HubSpot’s pricing page shows the $3,000 Professional fee and the $7,000 Enterprise fee as required. Free and Starter carry none. Independent reviews describe it as non-refundable and charged whether or not you use the sessions. Buying through a partner agency sometimes waives it.
What do you lose by staying on Starter?
The workflow automation builder, A/B testing, custom reporting, and eligibility for the marketing SMS add-on. Starter still covers email, forms, landing pages, basic social scheduling and simple automation, on 1,000 marketing contacts with a 5x email send multiplier.
Is there a way to get automation without paying for Professional?
Yes. The CRM is free and separate from Marketing Hub, and most campaign, automation and lead-reply tools sync with it. Keep the CRM as the system of record and run campaigns and follow-ups from a tool that plugs into it. The alternatives post above lists the options with verified pricing.
The bottom line
The cliff is real and it is by design. Professional is a department’s tool at a department’s price: $800 a month, three seats, a $3,000 fee at checkout, and contact tiers that move on their own. If you are that department, buy it and build the workflows. If you are one person with a list under a few thousand and a board that wants pipeline this quarter, the better step is sideways, not up: keep the free CRM, and put the campaign and reply work somewhere that does it with you.
