HubSpot’s Free Marketing Tools: What a First Marketing Hire Can Run for $0

The most useful thing HubSpot sells is the thing it gives away. The free CRM is a real system of record, the sales team already lives in it, and it costs nothing. The free marketing tools on top of it are the part people misjudge in both directions: too little to run a marketing function, and far too much to walk away from.

This post lists exactly what the free tier includes and where it stops, from HubSpot’s own pages, checked 2026-09-05. Then it lays out the year-one setup a first marketing hire can build on top of it: free CRM as the foundation, and the campaign and reply engine from somewhere that syncs with it, so the first $800 a month never has to be spent.

What the free tier includes

Per HubSpot’s CRM page, Marketing Hub pricing page and free marketing tools page:

ToolFree tierThe catch
Users2A third person needs a Starter seat
Contacts1,000Older accounts may sit on different limits; check yours
Marketing email2,000 sends per calendar monthCarries HubSpot branding; no authenticated sending from your domain
Automation1 automated actionNot a workflow builder
Forms and CTAsIncludedSubmitters are set to marketing contacts by default
Landing pagesIncludedTemplate pages; independent guides note a cap and no custom domain on free
Live chatIncluded”Includes HubSpot branding”
Chatbot builderIncluded, “limited features”Scripted, linear flows; branching needs Professional
Ad managementIncludedConnect accounts and see basic attribution
ReportingStandard dashboardCustom reports need Professional

The last row is why you keep it. Everything above it is why you cannot stop there.

Where the free tier stops

Four walls, in the order a first marketing hire hits them.

The branding wall. Every marketing email and the chat widget carry HubSpot’s branding on the free tier, and email sends from HubSpot’s domain rather than yours. For a Series A company selling to other companies, that is the first thing a prospect notices. Starter removes it at $20 a seat.

The send wall. 2,000 sends a month is one email to 1,000 contacts, twice. A welcome sequence, a newsletter and a launch email in the same month is over the line.

The automation wall. One automated action is not a sequence. The demo no-show reminder, the post-demo nurture and the re-engagement email each need branches and timing, and those need Professional’s workflow builder, which is the $800 cliff.

The reply wall. The scripted bot books a meeting if the visitor follows the script and asks for an email if they do not. Nothing answers a real question after hours. HubSpot chatbot vs Customer Agent walks the 9pm message through both.

None of these walls is a complaint. The free tier is a CRM with a marketing sampler attached, and HubSpot is clear about that on its pricing page. The mistake is treating the sampler as the plan, or, in the other direction, treating the walls as a reason to buy Professional when a team of one needs about a third of it.

Free versus Starter, in one paragraph

Starter at $20 per seat per month removes the branding, lets you send from your authenticated domain, raises the allowance to 5x your contact tier on 1,000 marketing contacts, adds simple automation and basic social scheduling. It does not add workflows, A/B testing or custom reports; those are Professional. For most first hires, Starter is the right HubSpot plan for the occasional email sent from HubSpot itself. The campaigns still need an engine.

The year-one setup on the free CRM

Here is the configuration this whole cluster keeps arriving at, written from the free tier upward.

Foundation: the free HubSpot CRM. Contacts, companies, deals, pipelines and lifecycle stages. Sales works here. Marketing reads here. Keep it tidy, and keep marketing contacts at zero unless HubSpot is sending the email, so the billable column stays empty. HubSpot marketing contacts, explained has the audit.

Capture: HubSpot forms and meetings. Free, on the CRM, and every submission becomes a contact with a source. Check each form’s marketing setting so a support form does not make someone billable.

Engine: a tool that syncs both ways. It reads contacts and lifecycle stages from HubSpot, drafts the campaign from a brief, creates the images, publishes the email, the posts, the landing page and the blog post, runs the follow-ups triggered by what each lead does, answers the website chat and text replies in seconds, and writes replies, meetings and activity back to the HubSpot record. The test for “syncs both ways” is ten minutes long and is in what syncs and what does not.

Proof: the deal in HubSpot, the chain in the engine. Revenue lives on the HubSpot deal. The chain from message to reply to meeting to that deal lives in the engine, which is how the board question gets answered without an Enterprise attribution report. Leaving Marketing Hub without losing attribution covers why a recorded chain beats a model at this stage.

That setup costs the engine plus, if you want branded one-off sends from HubSpot, a Starter seat. It skips the Professional door, the three seats, the onboarding fee and the contact tiers, and the sales team never leaves the record it knows.

When to buy a hub anyway

You have grown into it. Three or more marketers, a list past 2,000, weekly multi-channel campaigns and someone whose job is the workflow builder. Sized for a department lists the four signals.

Sales needs Sales Hub. That is a separate purchase and a separate decision; nothing here argues against it. Marketing running from the free CRM plus an engine works the same whether sales is on free, Starter or Professional.

You want HubSpot’s attribution models. Volume is what makes them meaningful, and the post above says when that is.

Where Marqeable fits

Marqeable is the engine in that setup. It runs on the HubSpot or Salesforce you keep, drafts and publishes the campaign from a brief, runs follow-ups based on what each lead does, answers website chat and text replies in seconds and books the meeting inside the conversation, with email replies drafted for your approval. Every reply, meeting and activity lands on the HubSpot record. Private beta, small early cohort, month-to-month, hands-on onboarding included, beta pricing quoted on the call and locked for life for early customers. The homepage comparison shows it next to HubSpot row by row, and the alternatives guide covers the rest of the field.

Frequently asked questions

What are the limits of HubSpot’s free marketing tools?

Two users, 1,000 contacts, 2,000 branded email sends a month, one automated action, branded live chat, a limited chatbot builder, forms, template landing pages, ad management and a standard dashboard, per HubSpot’s pages. Older accounts may differ.

Is HubSpot free good enough for a startup’s marketing?

As a CRM, yes. As a marketing engine, no: branded email, one automated action, template pages and a scripted bot will not run a campaign or answer a lead. Keep the foundation; add the engine.

What is the difference between Free and Starter?

Starter at $20 a seat removes branding, adds authenticated sending, a 5x send allowance on 1,000 marketing contacts, simple automation and basic social scheduling. Workflows, A/B testing and custom reports still need Professional.

How do you run real campaigns on the free CRM?

Connect a tool that reads contacts and lifecycle stages from HubSpot, drafts and sends the campaigns, runs follow-ups, answers replies and writes activity back to the record.

The bottom line

HubSpot’s free tier is the best CRM a Series A company can get for nothing and the weakest marketing engine it will ever run. Keep the first, stop expecting the second, and put the engine on top of the foundation instead of buying the floor above it. A first marketing hire can run a real year one that way: forms and meetings on the free CRM, campaigns and replies from something that syncs with it, and the deal, the chain and the board answer all in one place.

See it live: Marqeable drafts full campaigns from a brief, runs follow-up automations across text and email, answers every visitor and reply, and links revenue to the exact message, with a human approving every send.
