AI Overviews Are Eating B2B Traffic: The 2026 Data

Your organic traffic chart is drifting down and your rankings have not moved. You are not imagining it, and you did not break anything. Google is answering the question above your result, and a growing share of searchers never scrolls past the answer. This post collects the actual measured data on the AI Overviews impact on B2B traffic - precisely attributed, caveats included - and then makes an argument most of the coverage skips: traffic was always a proxy, and the smart move now is reallocating toward what the traffic was for.

The data, study by study

Pew Research (July 2025; 900 US adults, 68,879 searches from March 2025) is the cleanest independent measurement. Users clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. Only 1% clicked a link inside the AI summary itself. And sessions ended entirely after 26% of pages with an AI summary, versus 16% without. Roughly 18% of the observed Google searches produced an AI summary at the time - a share that has only grown since.

Ahrefs (April 2025; 300K informational keywords) found AI Overview presence correlated with a 34.5% lower CTR for the number-one ranking page on March 2025 data. Its December 2025 re-run on a larger dataset found a 58% position-one CTR reduction. Same methodology, nine months later, materially worse.

Seer Interactive (September 2025 update; 3,119 informational queries, June 2024 to September 2025) measured organic CTR of 0.52% when an AI Overview is present and your brand is not cited in it, versus 1.45% with no AI Overview - a 65.2% year-over-year decline for the uncited case. If you have seen a “-61%” figure circulating, it traces to this Seer research. Two findings inside it matter as much as the headline: brands cited in the AI Overview got 35% more organic clicks than uncited ones, and - the honest caveat - CTRs fell 41-46% even on queries without AI Overviews, so not all of the decline is AI-caused.

BrightEdge (via Search Engine Journal, March 2026) is the B2B-specific alarm: the share of tracked B2B technology keywords triggering AI Overviews grew from 36% to 82% in 12 months (February 2025 to February 2026). Whatever CTR penalty exists now applies to most of your keyword set.

Bain (February 2025; consumer survey, 1,100+ respondents) found about 60% of searches end without progressing to another site - a survey-based estimate, not a log-file measurement - and roughly 80% of consumers rely on AI summaries for at least 40% of their searches. Bain estimates a 15-25% organic traffic reduction; treat that as an estimate, not a measurement.

The Brick Factory (June 2026) looked at what actually landed: across roughly 70 client sites, 73% lost organic traffic year over year, with a median decline of 15.8%. The sample skews nonprofits, associations, and higher ed, and the author calls it “a real-world snapshot, not a definitive study” - which is exactly how to read it.

Similarweb (via Press Gazette) found the zero-click share of Google news searches specifically rose from 56% in May 2024 to about 69% in May 2025. News is the worst-hit category - do not read that 69% as an overall number.

Different methods, different samples, one direction. The debate left is about magnitude, not sign.

The counter-current: small, but high intent

The same shift that suppresses clicks is creating a new referral source, and the early data on it points one way: tiny volume, unusual quality.

SE Ranking (July 2026; 101,574 websites) found ChatGPT referral traffic grew 36.7% month over month in May 2026 to an all-time high - and was still only 0.32% of tracked traffic. Always pair the growth rate with the base. One structural detail worth noting: 60% of AI-referred traffic lands on homepages, versus 17% for organic - these visitors arrive pre-briefed on you, not on a blog post.

On quality, a Seer Interactive single-site case study (October 2024 to April 2025) found ChatGPT referrals converted at 15.9% versus 1.76% for Google organic - on roughly 11K AI sessions against 14M organic sessions, and on one site. That is a signal, not a benchmark. Directionally consistent: a 2025 Semrush study estimated AI search visitors are worth about 4.4x organic visitors.

The measurement layer is catching up too: GA4 added a native “AI Assistant” channel on May 13, 2026, auto-classifying ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity referrers. When Google gives something its own default channel group, it has stopped being fringe.

Put the two datasets together and the shape is clear: per Pew, clicks happen in 8% of visits when an AI summary is present versus 15% without - roughly half the clicks. But per SE Ranking and Seer’s case study, the visitors who still arrive are far closer to a decision. Fewer visits, more intent per visit. Your strategy should follow the intent, not mourn the volume.

Traffic was a proxy: the reallocation thesis

Here is the argument the “SEO is dead” and “SEO is fine” camps both miss. B2B sites never wanted traffic. They wanted conversations with buyers, and traffic was the proxy that made sense when discovery meant ten blue links. The proxy is breaking; the goal is intact. The new chain looks like this:

Citation -> branded search -> direct visit -> conversation.

A buyer asks an assistant a question. Your product gets named in the answer - that is the citation, and per Seer’s data above, cited brands get 35% more organic clicks too. The buyer searches your name or types your URL, lands on your homepage (remember SE Ranking’s 60% homepage share), and arrives with the comparison already half-made. What happens in the next five minutes decides everything.

That reallocation has two practical legs:

  1. Be citable. Structured pages, honest and specific product content, real numbers, clear comparisons - the material assistants can safely quote. That beats trying to claw back rankings on informational queries the AI now answers. The tactics are in our primer on getting your business recommended by AI search.
  2. Build conversion infrastructure for the visitors who do arrive. When a pre-briefed, high-intent buyer lands, a static form and a next-day reply wastes exactly the traffic you have least of. Chat that actually answers questions, replies that go out in seconds instead of hours, and attribution that traces revenue to the exact message are now worth more than the next how-to post. This is the same conclusion the post-Drift chat market is converging on - see what replaces conversational marketing in 2026.

The math is simple: when visits fall and intent per visit rises, the marginal dollar moves from acquiring more visits to winning more of each one.

Honest limits: what this data cannot tell you

Nobody has 2027 visibility, and this space punishes extrapolation. The cautionary tale is Gartner’s February 2024 prediction that search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 - Gartner predicted it, and it largely did not materialize as stated, because Google adapted with AI Overviews and kept its dominant share of search behavior. Every curve in the table above deserves the same skepticism the Gartner prediction earned.

Also: SEO is not dead where it matters most to revenue. Bottom-funnel queries, comparison intent, and pricing research still produce clicks and pipeline, and Seer’s citation data shows organic and AI visibility reinforce each other rather than trade off. And several of these studies measure informational queries, consumer behavior, or skewed samples - your keyword mix may be hit harder or barely at all. Check your own GA4, now with its AI Assistant channel, before reallocating anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much do AI Overviews reduce organic clicks?

Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without. Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower #1 CTR on March 2025 data, and its December 2025 re-run found 58%. Seer Interactive measured 0.52% organic CTR when an AI Overview is present and the brand is not cited, versus 1.45% with no AI Overview.

Are AI Overviews hitting B2B keywords specifically?

Yes. BrightEdge data via Search Engine Journal shows tracked B2B technology keywords triggering AI Overviews grew from 36% to 82% in the 12 months to February 2026.

Is traffic from AI assistants like ChatGPT worth anything?

Small but high intent. SE Ranking found ChatGPT referrals up 36.7% month over month in May 2026, yet still 0.32% of tracked traffic. Seer’s single-site case study found 15.9% conversion versus 1.76% for organic (one site - a signal, not a benchmark), and Semrush estimates AI search visitors are worth about 4.4x organic visitors.

Is SEO dead for B2B SaaS in 2026?

No. Bottom-funnel and comparison intent still earns clicks and pipeline, and cited brands get more organic clicks. What is over is traffic volume as the goal - reallocate toward being citable and toward winning the fewer, higher-intent visitors who arrive.

The bottom line

The measured data says clicks per search are falling and the trend accelerated through 2025 into 2026, with B2B tech keywords now overwhelmingly triggering AI Overviews. The same data says the visitors still arriving carry more intent than the ones you lost. Traffic was a proxy for conversations with buyers. Reallocate accordingly: make your product citable, and make sure that when the pre-briefed buyer lands, someone - or something - answers in seconds and wins the conversation.

See it live: Marqeable’s website chat answers the high-intent visitor in the moment, the conversations inbox keeps every reply fast, and attribution ties the revenue to the exact message.
